Nick Cousins can look to Scott Laughton for an example of what he needs to work on to get his game to the NHL level. Hopefully Ian Laperriere can get some quality time in with these kids and help them take the next step in their developments.

Looks like Derek Mathers will be taking the Zac Rinaldo route to the pros!

Hopefully Mathers can be like Rinaldo and less like Jody Shelley.

Mezzy can't get back soon enough. Adding Mezzy to the back end can only improve the team in all areas. All though the Flyers special teams of late has been DYYY-NOOOOOOO-MYYYYYYYTE!

Has the NHL given a reason why Alfredsson has not faced supplemental discipline for cross-checking Rinaldo twice in the head?

besides the fact that his name is Daniel Alfredsson?

In all seriousness.. that my honest thinking. Had roles been reversed there is snowballs chance in hell that Rinaldo doesnt get suspended.

Just goes to prove that all are capable. Even guys like G and Crosby do that occasionally.

I agree.. I hope he can maintain at least a 4th line role for a long time. Seemed like a good guy.

It happens, but it's more forgivable for guys who possess the puck a lot.

You don't want your 4th liners making too many risky passes.

Asking NHL discipline to be consistent is sort of like asking Nickelback to create good music. It simply isn't possible.

As soon as an incident happens, the phone calls start. The owner will call to say you can't suspend him, he's my meal ticket. Guys who are friends with Shanahan and Campbell who have affiliation with the guy facing a suspension will badger them for leniency. The NHL still ridiculously feels that no injury should equal fewer games, rather than using the more solid logic that an injury caused should add more games to a base suspension.

Take Kaleta. I think his shove to Richards last night should be 5 games, based on past history and dangerous nature of the play. The fact that Richards isn't hurt shouldn't reduce that 5 games to 3. It should be that Kaleta gets 5 games, and then if Richards is hurt, he gets an additional 2 added on.

The bottom line is, an Alfredsson, Neal, Malkin or Ovechkin gets more leeway than a third liner.

Absolutely... however, I personally think we need to get away from injuries being part of the equation. Suspend the act, not the result. Harry Z should have gotten four games no matter what. He was coming off of a game where he through a very solid hit with little time left on the clock... You know the conversation was that, even though it was a good hit, he needs to be smart about it... Whats he do? Goes head hunting his next hit. As long as guys get off with a game because a player "was uninjured on the play", we are gonna continue to see them pushing the envelope.

I hate that they take injury into account. Sometimes, guys get hit from behind and are lucky not to get hurt. Other times, guys are hit on much less dirty plays and happen to go into the boards awkward enough to get hurt. The hit itself should be what's punished, not what the result of it was.

It's like the Feaster thing with the O'Reilly offer sheet. People saying he dodged a bullet. The Flames organization did, but not Feaster. He and his crew STILL signed ROR to an offer sheet when ROR was waiver eligible. It doesn't matter if Colorado matched, it's still a really dumb mistake. He shouldn't be judged on the outcome of the OS but on the original decision to sign ROR to one.

Bill, do you think Cousins has any fair trade value right now? Or does his pending case sort of put everything on hold? I'm wondering if a team might get a little wide-eyed over the kid's numbers and be willing to overpay a little for him. Just spitballing possible ways we could either move up in the draft or possibly add another 1st.

Does Mathers have any offensive upside whatsoever? Is there an offensive skill he brings to the table that would enable him to hold down an NHL job?

Make injury impact a secondary assessment.

Take Kaleta shoving Richards. Based on the offender's history and the level of danger to Richards, I think 5 games is a good penalty. Now Richards wasn't hurt, so suddenly it's only 3 games? Bullpoop. It should stay at 5 games.

Where injuries should come into play is as a secondary factor. Rather than lopping time off because Richards wasn't hurt, make it an additional penalty if he had been. So if last night's play happens and if Richards is hurt, go, 5 games for the action and an additional two for the injury.

He got the same penalty as James Neal. Had Claude Giroux been Rusty Fedotenko, he likely gets 2 games.
